When I was a little rotund child waddling my way through the house, one of my favorite records was "Chipmunk Punk". This record highlighted some of 1980's (the year, not the decade) best songs. Nevermind you could have saved yourself the trouble of buying this album by just playing the originals at 78RPM, it was still pretty cool for a 4-year old boy.
Walking home from lunch today in the thickness of the heat, I stumbled across a cassette copy of "Chipmunk Punk". This comes three years after I repurchased the vinyl copy off of eBay. It probably won't get any play, but it's still a nice conversation piece (right next to my copy of "Pac Man Fever").
Why did I rebuy the album? Well, I saw it listed for $300 at a record store in the village. I'm beginning to think there was something special about that particular copy and the title itself carries no value.
So what songs are on this preschool compilation? Well we have "Let's Go" by the Cars, "Call Me" by Blondie, "My Sharona" by the Knack and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by Queen. As good as these songs were, they sound even better sung by imaginary rodents.
On a related topic: Is "KidStuff Records" still in business? Or "Peter Pan Records"? Those lables will always stick in my mind everytime I eyeball an orange Fisher Price turntable at someone's garage sale.
... I miss my childhood...
